Por ser um disco mais “calmo” do Neurosis, este disco foi muito criticado em seu lançamento em 2001, mas de lá pra cá se tornou até “cult”. É o primeiro disco em que o Neurosis usa elementos do folk (válvula de escape de Scott Kelly e Steve von Till), uma revolução no som da banda proporcionada em partes pelo produtor Steve Albini.

  Encarnado é um disco pop e alternativo ao mesmo tempo, tão abrangente que seria facilmente consumido pela massa ("Damião" poderia ser tema do atacante do Santos na copa, caso ele não tivesse caído de produção e fosse o 9 da seleção – imagino Galvão Bueno gritando: "Dá neles, Damião!") quanto em circuitos intelectuais (intelectualóides também). A morte é o assunto presente em quase todas as faixas e tema central nas melhores como "Queimando a Língua", "Ciranda do Aborto" (que seria facilmente interpretada por uma banda de Death Metal, claro, se houvesse mais sensibilidade – geral - no gênero) e "A Velha da Capa Preta". O álbum não é autoral, quase todo o disco é feito em parcerias e versões e isso não tira nem um pouco o brilho de Encarnado, muito pelo contrário, "Não Tenha Ódio no Verão" passou quase desapercebida no disco Tropicália lixo lógico de Tom Zé e aqui é uma das melhores faixas, com um brilhantismo exuberante na voz de Juçara, aliás surgindo como uma das grandes interpretes nacionais, ao lado de Gal Costa e Maria Bethânia, sem exageros.

  Talvez o ponto negativo do álbum seja a total desconexão entre as 26 faixas e por ser muito longo, mas vale muito a pena pela atmosfera de sons (mesmo desconectados e longos), influência certa para os grupos de drone dos anos 2000 como Sunn O))), Nadja e Methadrone. destaques: "Helpless Child", "Mellothumb", "Live Through Me" e a épica "The Sound".
